Change the world or go home

So I ran across a blog post the other day by Steve Clayton. http://blogs.msdn.com/stevecla01/archive/2006/10/31/microsoft-change-the-world-or-go-home.aspx

The statement "Microsoft Change the world or go home." I really think this applies to OCS. When you think about what Microsoft is doing with OCS, they are in fact trying to change the world of communications in business. With the Communicator client itself being able to not only IM, but act as a softphone, you start reducing the need to a traditional telephone. Add on top the APIs that allow you to embed this functionality into your everyday business applications, you further reduce the need for a traditional telephone. So while there are IP based hardware phones, honestly I think with small bluetooth head sets being available why would you want one?

I don't think the ideas have all been clarified yet, but I think with future releases we will see more in this direction. What I'd like to see in the future is killing off cell phones, and instead have mobile phones which run off of internet access. T Mobile already has a phone and service that does this, but I don't think it is quite there yet.

Love it or Hate it, but a lot of Microsoft products do intend to change the world or at least go against the grain in thier space. While it's not an offical Microsoft slogan, I think it is one that fits.

Steve -Thanks for the sticker and business card.

I agree, why would WE want a hardware based IP phone when we can have a bluetooth headset and use a softphone? However, WE don't need convincing that this technology is a good thing. Average users may find the leap from using a hardwired handset to a wireless headset powered by software on their computer a little daunting though, at first.

I think a good feature of OCS is that it won't matter in what manner you connect, whether it be software (mobile, web, desktop) or a hardware phone; everyone will be using the same protocol and we'll get presence. :-)

Nice blog and great interview on Dot Net Rocks.
